The ABC's of Adrenal Health

     Feeling lethargic, having brain fog, craving salt and sugar?  Having problems falling asleep and waking up? All can be related to your body telling you your adrenals need more support. What does this actually mean? To start off with, your adrenal glands are a part of your endocrine system and located at the top of each kidney. Their function is to produce hormones that regulate blood sugar, burn protein and fat, react to illness, injuries and stress, and regulate blood pressure. If you are a woman that has a lot of stress in her life and relies heavily on coffee and soda, there is a good chance your adrenals may be fatigued and struggling. Resting and finding healthy ways to manage your stress are critical to preventing adrenal fatigue. In addition, simple changes in your diet could make a world of difference not only your adrenals, but how energized and motivated you feel every day. The ABC’s of eating a diet for healthy adrenal glands are as followed:

 

A. Seaweed- I know this one might sound a little strange, but you can find a seaweed dish on almost any Japanese restaurant menu. I like to order a seaweed salad that contains vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic. There are many benefits to consuming seaweed. Magnesium is plentiful in seaweed, which is needed for the adrenals to produce hormones. Seaweed is also an excellent source of calcium, folate, iron, and zinc. You may also enjoy seaweed as a dried low-calorie snack or in soups. I would recommend having some seaweed once a week to nourish the adrenal glands. 

 

B. Green Olives- Olives contain beneficial fats such as omega 3 fatty acids that do a wonderful job with reducing body inflammation. Diets that are full of processed foods, sugar, salt, and caffeine cause inflammation and stresses the adrenal glands. Munching on about 10 green olives may also significantly reduce stomach cramping’s from PMS. Green olives also make a nice salty addition to salads. The high fat content will also provide some sustainable energy and vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that fights cancer cells.

 

C. Ashwagandha- Ashwa-what? Yes, this is a powerful herb that has a great deal of research behind its health claims. This is a kind of adaptogenic herb, or an herb that helps your body respond better to stress and supports hormones. Ashwagandha may also boost the immune system to fight off disease and prevent insomnia. The dosage for ashwagandha varies between age and condition, so it is best to talk to your health care practitioner before taking. In a powdered form, you may mix 1 teaspoon ashwagandha root with ½ cup boiled coconut milk, ½ cup of water, 1 teaspoon raw honey, and cardamom to taste. Sip lukewarm before bedtime. 

 

     Adrenal Fatigue is a relatively new condition that doctors have started to notice. Some research has shown that a great deal of stress, poor diet, and dependence on caffeine and sugar can cause a women’s adrenal glands to suffer. If you are experiencing severe adrenal problems such as hair loss, dizziness, or unbearable tiredness, talk to your health care practitioner. The ABC’s for a healthy adrenal gland diet will nurture your endocrine system and restore your lost zest for life!
