ABC Nutrition on Apple Cider Vinegar for Women’s Health

     Apple cider vinegar is simply what it sounds like – a vinegar made from apples. Celebrities and the media have made this vinegar popular lately, but what does it do and does it really work? There are many claims about ACV being a weight loss answer and more, but we are going to talk about the factual health benefits it provides for women. One important thing to keep in mind is that there are no “miracles” when it comes to your health. Thankfully, there is one proven sure-fire way to keep your weight down, energy high, and avoid disease; simply adding daily exercise and diet with a variety of whole foods to your life is the answer, it is no secret! Now back to ACV, one tablespoon every morning can make a huge difference in your day. We are going to educate you about apple cider vinegar – this is the ABC’s on ACV, if you will. 

 

A. Sugar Cravings – The usual ACV tonic includes one-tablespoon vinegar to 8 ounces of water. Most women report within the hour that their sugar cravings are completely gone. Research has shown that two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar can actually lower your blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity. This is a perfect addition to a woman’s morning routine. This tonic can be taken every morning, right before, or during a large meal to improve blood sugar spikes. It is not recommended to take on an empty stomach for ACV can cause nausea. A sweet and tangy ACV recipe to try is 1-tablespoon raw honey, 2 teaspoons ACV, and 2 cups warm water. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top for extra sugar control benefits. 

 

B. Clear skin – ACV is great for your skin because it naturally kills bacteria that cause acne. ACV can also be used topically as a toner. Depending on your skin type, mix one teaspoon of vinegar with two teaspoons of water. For sensitive skin, mix one teaspoon of ACV in 10 teaspoons of water. You may dip a cotton ball into the solution and rub on the face, or put the solution in a spray bottle and mist. This tonic will kill bacteria, and unclog and shrink pores. Of course your face will smell of vinegar for about 4-5 minutes, but fades rather quickly and is totally worth the skin benefits. Another amazing effect of ACV is how it can get rid of warts without surgery. Soak a cotton ball into ACV and put it on the wart and cover with a Band-Aid overnight for a week or so. 

 

C. Boosts energy – ACV is an excellent source of calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese. These minerals help your muscles and body create energy. Mix up a natural energy drink at home using 1-cup coconut water, 2 tablespoons ACV, half a teaspoon of turmeric, and 1-teaspoon fresh grated ginger. This is an amazing drink to make to bring with you to the gym – providing energy without the crash.

 

     When shopping for your very own apple cider vinegar there are a few things to look out for. For starters, it must be organic, raw, and unfiltered. Next, the vinegar must say, “contains the mother.” The “mother” is potentially one of the most important parts of the vinegar. The mother is in fact a bacterium that grows during the fermentation process. Most other companies remove this bacterium because it is responsible for the sour taste of the vinegar- however we want this! One last tip is to always dilute the vinegar with water when drinking- and use a straw if possible. Not diluting the vinegar can cause stomach burning and is also very harmful to the enamel on your teeth.
