ABC Nutrition on Coconut Water

January 15, 2018

Coconut water is one of the best and tastiest ways to keep our bodies hydrated! Without proper hydration, we may feel sluggish, weak, and have a hard time concentrating. Coconut water is the liquid inside young coconuts. This liquid is packed with natural sugars, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, enzymes, and amino acids. Read on to learn the ABC’s about why you should be drinking coconut water.

A. Skin Health: Coconut water contains antimicrobial properties which reduces the risk of outbreaks from the inside out by killing harmful bacteria. Lauric acid is found in an abundance in coconut water and helps prevent against skin infections. In addition, staying hydrated keeps the skin clear and radiant looking. For women with sensitive skin, coconut water can be used to remove makeup and as a facial toner. Simply dip a cotton ball into pure coconut water and make circular motions on the face to reduce pore size and cleanse the skin.

B. Energy and Metabolism: When your body is dehydrated, your metabolism slows down and you burn less calories. This interferes with weight loss and energy. However, coconut water is high in potassium and magnesium which are key electrolytes that even some waters do not contain. For those doing training and two or more hours of activity, you can improve your metabolism and energy by drinking coconut water to rehydrate faster. Add coconut water to a blender with frozen blueberries, kale, and unflavored protein powder for an antioxidant rich metabolism smoothie.

C. Anti aging: Coconut water contains a natural plant growth hormone called cytokinins. Cytokinins promote cellular division. This means it is great for slowing down the aging process by regenerating new cells. Coconut water may help reduce wrinkles when consumed regularly.

When buying coconut water, keep in mind not all are made the same. You can commonly find this delicious drink in bottle or box form in the United States since most of the coconuts are imported. Make sure to always check the nutrition label for no added sugars or flavorings that can take away from the health benefits. About 10-12 grams of natural sugar is normal in waters with no added sugars. It is not recommended to replace all plain water with coconut water. Drinking 8 ounces of this tasty, nutty liquid about two to three times a week will keep your body feeling healthy!
